Our featured Grooming Tip: "An ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of cure". As old as
that saying is, it is the key to your pet's beautiful and
healthy coat. With the proper tools, a little practice
and some of your time every week you can keep your long
haired pet looking and feeling their best.
The
best tool to use on long haired breeds is a stainless
steel comb. That's right a comb, not a brush. Brushes are
great for making the coat look good but do very little
for detangling the hair. The comb separates the hair and
can help in taking out the mats or tangled hair.
If you
are unsure ask your groomer to show you the proper way to
comb a dog or cats fur. They should appreciate the effort
you put in because groomers don't like to see matted
hair. It takes them longer to groom, makes it harder on
the animal and costs you more money. If your groomer
recommends shaving the hair, they may be just looking out
for your pets best interest. It can be painful for the
animal to comb out serious mats.
To
minimize discomfort to your pet, push the hair up
(opposite the way it grows) with one hand and gently comb
down with the other hand. Comb at the roots to get all
the old dead hair out. Work slowly with mats hooking
small amounts of hair in the comb. Please don't hook the
whole mat and pull as that can be very painful for the
animal. If your pet does not appreciate your efforts,
divide the process into several shorter sessions, with a
treat, walk or playtime afterwards. |
